Nelson’s Column, Great Yarmouth
This is one of the most absurd things about my hometown, a great column built in 1817, a foot shorter than its namesake in London. When it was built it was opposite the naval barracks on the shore and in a large area of dunes but now it’s in the middle of a long, dull industrial estate. Just sat there, with Britannia atop not looking out to sea but over to Gorleston and Suffolk.
